Long-time Longmont resident Leona M. Krueger passed away on June 26, 2018.
Wife of Walter E. Krueger (deceased) and mother of seven-- Leona left the dancefloor of life in peace at Good Samaritan hospital in Lafayette, Colorado.
Raised in Golva, North Dakota, Leona (Kremers) met a returning serviceman from across the Montana state line in 1948. Walter Krueger swept her off her feet at a Golva townhall dance. And so began what would soon become the 65 years of their “marriage waltz” until Walt’s passing in 2013.
Leona would frequently counsel her children and grandchildren, “Someone’s gotta lead. Someone’s gotta follow. Many times, the roles get reversed.” That was Leona’s personal philosophy based on 88 years of life experience as a devoted wife and mother.
Priorities of faith, family, and festivities filled Leona and Walt’s life in Longmont. Seven children (Richard, Terry, Debbie, Tom-- deceased, Jerry, Rita and Shawn) produced 17 grandchildren, who produced 29 great-grandchildren, who produced 3 great-great grandchildren. Gatherings at the home on Lincoln Street (and later, on Hover Street) were always celebrations of organized chaos. Leona made sure that everyone was welcome. Whether you were an in-law or an “out-law”, neighbor or newbie-- you felt embraced by the Feeling of Family she fostered.
Leona and Walt were avid card players. Bridge, Canasta, and Pinochle were their specialties. They also enjoyed viewing Broncos, Nuggets, and Rockies games together on TV. She co-owned and managed “Walt’s Patio Drive-in” with her husband on Longmont’s Main St. from 1967 to 1976. Leona was co-pilot/navigator on their RV motorhome trips to all 50 states. They traveled through Canada to Alaska; flew over to Hawaii; and toured Europe. For as long as her body held up, Leona was Walt’s dance partner through six decades of love and commitment.
Leona was a patient listener and an opinionated sounding-board. She could be sweet, and she could be “tangy”. (Which was probably why a Strawberry-Rhubarb pie was her favorite dessert!) One morning you might be proud to announce that you’d made your bed all by yourself-- the next, she’d firmly instruct you how it was supposed to be done. One moment, she could be focused on the story of your grandchild’s achievements at the weekly Bridge party-- then lay down a trump card that knocked you for a loop.
Leona Krueger’s memorial mass will be held on Friday, August 3, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church, 323 Collyer St. Longmont, Colorado. All are welcome to attend in celebration of Leona’s very full and wonderful life. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.
