On Sunday, May 16, 2021, Meriam Rainey Phillips went home to be with Jesus whom she loved,
followed, and served throughout her life. At 93 years old she was a resident at Hover Assisted Living
under Hospice care.
Meriam was born on 1/3/ 1928 to Harry Rainey and Meriam Davis Rainey in Camden, NJ. She lived in
New Jersey until she retired and then moved to Schroon Lake, NY, eventually moving in her last decade
to Frederick, CO. Meriam, her mother, her granddaughter, and great granddaughter all have the same
middle name, Arlington, a tradition spanning more than 120 years.
Most of her working career was spent teaching elementary school usually kindergarten and first grade.
She loved being a part of starting children off on the right foot on their educational journey. She even
kept in touch with some former students well into her 80’s.
Meriam loved the Lord and spent much of her retirement praying for a long list of family, friends, and
missionaries each day. A few of her favorite verses were Matthew 22:37-39,” Love the Lord your God
with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest
commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.”
She is survived by her son Douglas (Conni) Phillips, her grandchildren Ed (Melissa) Phillips and Cathleen
(Dan) Owens, and her great grandchildren Sidney, Drew, and Liam Phillips, and Parker and Alaya Owens.
Meriam is predeceased by her parents, her spouse Dale Phillips, and her brother Joseph Rainey.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Carroll Lewellen Mortuary Services on May 28, 2021 at 10
